“Cascade” was the name of this display garden in the "Avenue of the Achievable Gardens" at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show 2019. It won gold for People's Choice Awards, as voted from the public, and a Silver Award -second place- from the Judges.
This contemporary garden showcases a water feature, colourful arrays of hardy natives and exotic plants, encasing laser-cut metal art with the aim to immerse the visitor into a relaxed space that excites the senses.
The two grafted Acacias (Acacia cognata ‘Limelight’) add an amazing decorative impact at the entrance, while welcoming you into the garden. Floating bluestone pavers on the surface of the pond adventurously lead you to the open paved area. The same bluestone continues to flow to the sitting area, where they are spaced apart to create a permeable surface, allowing the rain water to percolate and recharge the water table.
Sit on the edge of the timber bench that doubles as a nifty waterfall and let the water tickle your feet, while the trickling calming sound of the waterfall fades out the city noise. A pump drives the water up the bench leg and through to the front edge of the bench, cascading the water into the pond.
Descending vertical posts add rhythm and dynamic to the design. Same plant rows of mass-planting create playful displays, while the different level of garden beds add interest to the flat space.
Gaze at the white sculpture, a focal point that adds excitement and surprise. The sculpture, also designed by Alex Koskiniotis, represents an emerging flower bud and it is framed by two Chinese Tallow Wood trees (Sapium sebiferum), which showcase a brilliant array autumn foliage colour.
All the garden elements embrace the senses making it an enjoyable experience.
